Legal awareness sessions for respected Islamic religious scholars were held in Sulaymaniyah and Koya on Friday and Saturday, 21–22 October 2022.
According to official data published by the Supreme Judicial Council of Iraq, 1,498 divorce cases were recorded in Iraq in 2020 in which the woman was under the age of 15. In 2021, this figure increased to 2,594 cases, representing a significantly high number.
Following divorce, these children may face a range of psychological and social challenges. In recognition of its responsibility in this area, the Investigator Organization for supporting role of law and Democracy is implementing the project “Preventing Underage Marriage in the Kurdistan Region – Iraq”, in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and with financial support from the Regional Development and Protection Program (RDPP).
These activities form part of the Organization’s efforts to raise legal and social awareness, prevent underage marriage, and address its negative consequences for children.
